While this is a tragedy, my topic will focus on something that is not in this article. Arkansas Online had a story last night that mentioned the alert system that was used to send the school into lock down at approximately 9:38pm. There was no reason in the automated telephone/email/text message as to why the lock down was being initiated.
"Shots fired" was announced at 9:19pm.
My concerns grow out of the timing of everything, and especially the ill-informing lock down message. First, if the administrators were truly going to act swiftly in preserving the safety of everyone else, the alert would've been issued much sooner. If I remember correctly, the VATech shooting happened in the period of about 30 minutes. Had this UCA event been another mass shooting, countless more would be dead long before the alert was issued. Secondly, the alert contained no information. One would think and expect that in 20 minutes an official would've been able to enter a tiny bit of info into that alert message. Maybe something like "shots fired at _location_." The phrase "knowledge is power" comes to mind.
Info from an article online:
Quote: | Another unofficial update from a UCA student on KTHV website:
shooting that left at least two dead and left the campus on lockdown happened at the University of Arkansas at Conway on Sunday night, witnesses said.
UCA spokesman Warwick Sabin said the campus’ emergency alert system was activated at 9:38 p.m. Through automated phone calls and e-mails, students and faculty members on campus were advised to stay inside and lock their doors, Sabin said.
Campus police would not say what happened to prompt the lockdown. The Log Cabin Democrat in Conway says there was a report of a shooting.
A UCA police dispatcher said more information would be made available later.
Faulkner County Sheriff Karl Byrd said he understood that two people were dead, but referred further questions to the UCA Police Department. He said the sheriff’s office had offered assistance, but the UCA Police Department was handling the situation. |

I was there Friday afternoon. Well actually in Morrilton which is down the street. Crazy stuff. Schools are not prepared to handle this kind of thing. If more students had CHL things would be different. |

Common sense is generally lost on those employed by the government. |
