The highway between Whatawhata and Pirongia was expected to be closed until about 1pm today after a truck and trailer unit carrying glue rolled and crashed.
Waikato road policing manager Leo Tooman said the unit was on its way from Wellington to Auckland on SH39 when it rolled near Ngahinapouri about 5.30am.
Police were today still investigating the cause of the crash. The vehicle rolled between Finlayson and Reid Rds, spilling a small amount of the Bostik adhesive being transported.
The driver escaped without serious injury.
Firefighters diverted the adhesive, which police classify as dangerous goods, away from waterways next to the road. Environment Waikato was also advised of the small leak.
Mr Tooman said the unit would have to be unloaded and expected that would take about eight hours.
SH39 resident Dave Hallett said he was woken by a "mighty boom" when he heard the truck crash and skid a couple of hundred metres on its side before coming to rest.
"I thought it was a bomb or something," Mr Hallett said.
