well now that im done with my tv cabinet, its on to the next project in a medium I am much better at STEEL lol but anyway I have a question for any of you that have ever done any steel fab, (azmidget etc,) I am fairly surgical with a angle grinder and cutting wheels, in fact this is usually all I leave of a wheel and thats only because the housing gets in the way......

now I had a couple of shitty days at work birds nested my lift cable on my work truck, bad customers, overloads etc. and I felt the need for a lil destruction so I am building a new grill, out of a 30gal propane tank

so I stopped at harbor freight on the way home to get some 4.5in thin cutting wheels as I was running low on them, now I have been using these same wheels for years I dont use them as much since I got the chop saw but when I dont want to torch cut something that wont fit in the chop I go back to the angle grinder now I figured I would use up 4 wheels cutting this tank up, but the first 5 out of the pack did this

WTF I would barely touch the steel not even all the way through and shrapnel all over the place, dug up some old ones and they worked fine (shown in top pic with a new wheel) anyway I am going to move this into the hobby thread after a bit but I just wanted your take on the exploding blade phenomena as I know there are a few of you with experience with such things

oh and one more thing

thats how the tank looks cut I am going to torch the fittings off this weekend, cut some fill plates and burn them on, then start on the legs Very Happy

I have had a bloody knuckle from a socket that broke clean in half. They are surprisingly cheap, but it really worked it shows in the quality

x2! Fastenal has a good return policy and they can beat beat down on their pricing. When you go to pay for it haggle the price. An active account or sale is worth more to the sales people than giving you a 15% discount. If you make friends with a person in your local Fastenal you can get hooked up. I used to hook certain people up with my employee pricing. It is REALLY easy to give discounts in the computer. When you ring up the part # and QTY, it gives you an option for "pricing" and you can select a 5% discount, 10%discount, 15%discount, Contract, or "Mark up". With "Mark up" you enter the % OVER what Fastenal gets it for that you want to charge. Employee pricing is 1.2% "mark up". If you get shoddy cutting wheels, drill bits, etc bring it back for free replacement. I only seen 1 return for quality issues the whole year+ that I worked there. A customer called and told us the blind rivets we sold him were faulty and the head kept breaking off the mandrel without fastening the rivet. We loaded a new box with a different lot number and drove it out to him free of charge.

betcha money that the pack was dropped. Even a light drop can send these premature failure cracks through the disc. As soon as you start grinding, BAM, they explode. Maybe something heavy was being stacked on em, I don't know.

You said the 1st 4 broke, what about number 5 ? 6 ? etc ?

ok that is possible I had not thought of that, #5 ground all the way down to a nub the others are still not been used, I did most of the cut with the half used ones I had laying around

the fastenal website is being a bitch but I am pretty sure the closest one to me is nearly 45 miles from the house and at least 15mi from work

harbor freight is only 2 mi out of my way if I stop on my way home

Just a thought, I know it doesn't do much good now. Sorry man.

Look into some local welding supply stores. Thats where we get all our shit. Good quality, plus they are usually a small business. Always better to conduct business with another small shop if ya ask me.

and yes, fasteal website blows. Loading slower then shit....
