Some of you have seen pics, but here they come again. After 4 years of not driving the jeep I'm going to start working on it. Here's the deal. 4 years ago I was pretty much invincible. I had a new truck, I was making a shitton of cash and lived at home with mommy. I decided to make my jeep fucking huge and have failed horribly.
Since then I have had a daughter, bought a house, and 2 more cars. I haven't been able to get all the parts I need to do what I wanted and even if I did the jeep would not be streetable. I'm going back to stock for the most part. As the Heep sits now it has 4.5inch Rubicon Express lift kit SOA. A fullsize Chevy 44 up front and a dana 300 T-case that I can't bolt up without a 7/8 thick spacer. It was on it's way but I just want to drive the fucker now so here's what I'm doing.
Putting a stock D30 back up front, I found one today on CL for $100 complete with all the steering and brakes and am getting it tomorrow morning. I'm going back to spring under also. 4.5" springs and 2" revolver shackles are enough lift for now. I need to find a np231 Tcase and put a SYE kit on it. I have to get exhaust from the manifold back. Then I'm going to flush the coolant and change the oil. The motor only has 5-10,000 on it. I bought the motor brand new from ATK and put it in right before I got crazy lifting the thing. I also have to regear the front to 4.56 but I don't care about 4x4 right now I just want it moving I'll get some pics of the whole process.

Those are some beatass 35's on the rear just to give ya an ider how big it is.

dude.... honestly, I think your going about this allllll wrong.

D44 is fine up front. Why remove it for some craptastic D30 ? You like replacing parts or what ?

NP231 is the weak spot on any Heep. Its a pile of metal only worth the coin you get when turned in as scratch. Why put one in ? I have seen them grenade on complete yuppie stockers, just driving down the highway. At least get the NP241 HD or whatever the hell they call it. They come out of the Rubicon Jeep. Has a .5" wider chain, more gears in the planetary set, 4:1 gearing, etc. Much stronger. SYE is a must.

And going SPUA ??? Now your taking away all (if any) off road ability that little Heep may have. Your going to have more stuff hanging down and grabing on to any obstacle. Didn't you weld on new perches for the SPOA ? So your going to remove those, and weld on new ones.... again ? Make sure you don't warp the housing.

Why not keep the SPOA and lose the 4.5" lift springs ?

I dunno man, maybe just me. You don't have to use OEM parts to make it right. You can create a "built" cheap rig.

Like I said I just want to drive the thing for now. I know I'm putting crap back into it but crap is easy to find. If I were to continue the build the way I was going it would have cost me an easy $1000. I have already got the D30 in my garage and the 231 will be joining it tonight. By going about it how I am now it will be alot cheaper and like I said I want the jeep to be streetable. The piggys around here will not hesitate to bust out the tape. Back in the day I could give 2 fucks but now-a-day's I'd rather avoid the hassle.

Here's my weak little Dana 30. I'm ripping it apart and replacing the axle seals and u joints. One good thing is I'm going to rig up a cable actuator for the 4x4

I am sofa king we todd did! Do you see how huge I made it? It has to be towed to where ever I want to wheel. Anyways, here are some progress pics on the front axle. It's all apart except for the knuckles have yet to come off.

Empty housing

passenger side guts(outer and intermediate shafts, hub assembly, brake shields.)

driver side shaft along with rotors, calipers, carrier, diff cover

What happens to a 1/2" drive ratchet when you attempt to remove the 36mm axle nut that's torqued to 175 ft lbs.... This is classic hillbilly shit, check it out. I was using my usual 18" pipe to extend the ratchet and couldn't budge the fucker. I looked around the garage and found a 4' section of exhaust from the honda. It was the cat, muffler and about 18" of straight pipe between them. When the ratchet snapped I had an unexpected meeting with the floor. Cool I ended up going to my mom's and picking up my compressor, impact gun, and propane torch. It's what I should have done in the first place.

Gotta love breaking shit ! Bring it to Sears and get yourself a nice new one !

Looks like your making good progress man. And I understand where your coming from, and what your doing, I was just trying to offer some ideas. Probably woulda been easier to just get smaller springs, no ? Lower it down some and make it driveable for awhile ? I dunno, just another thought. But your definately right, the parts you need should be cheap and easy to find, as its most of the stuff the other Jeep boys are taking off.

Actually, I traded my stock samurai axles for a torn down Yota. The kid was going to do the swap, but then realized how much $$ it costs, and how hard it is to keep streetable, so he wanted stock again. So, no matter what we say, you aint the only one ! Laughing

Giving ya a hard time. But i'm subscribed. Keep it up.

nope Harbour freight for most of my shit now I used to have snap on and mac, when I quit working on shit for a living I sold them as I had no place to store them, when I went to start buying tools again snap on had changed their handles to a style I did not care for, never did like the MAC or crapman I went into HFT and found my old style, snap on ratchets and screwdrivers (and yes I do realize they are not the same quality) but I aint broke nothing yet that was not my fault so im good thanks (btw I break something from HFT they still replace it for free LOL)

I finally went out and picked up new ball joints and u-joints this morning. I whacked the knuckles off and tried knocking out the ball joints with a bfh but that aint happening. I'm going to rent the tool from autozone when I run by there a little later.

Don't let anyone shit ya. 18 year old u-joints are a fuckin bitch. The axle is almost there. I got the new ball joints pressed in this morning and I just finished up putting the new u joints in the axle shafts. My next task is to head to home depot and pick up some threaded rod, nuts, and some random washers so I can press in the new axle seals. Laughing

The carnage
